Overview

AI is already changing the landscape of design and construction – from concept development to documentation, practice management, and fabrication – raising technological, commercial and ethical questions. What defines AI? How can it be leveraged to push the boundaries of creativity and efficiency? What are the risks, the opportunities, the impacts and incentives of generative AI? And what does this mean for creators and consumers, for the architecture profession and architecture?

Through the dual lenses of research and practice, this webinar brings together an outstanding line up of expert presenters to:

  • provide an overview of AI and its uptake in Australian creative industries
  • explain the structure and capability of generative AI models and their relationship to design as a cognitive process
  • explore the possibilities of AI for creative problem solving and other aspects of architectural practice, and 
  • demonstrate how the technical and commercial applications of AI are evolving through tools an platforms such as XKool.


This two hour presentation is equivalent to 2 formal CPD points.  

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants should be able to: 

  • Discuss key risks, challenges and opportunities of AI in creative industries
  • Define predictive and generative machine learning
  • Describe human creative problem solving processes and the processes by which AI generates outputs
  • Discuss upstream and downstream impacts of generative AI on copyright incentives
  • Identify some currently available AI tools and their application in architectural practices
  • Critically evaluate the usability and potential benefits of presented AI tools for your practice.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             

NSCA 2021 Performance Criteria

This course will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects: 

PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC 18 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, research, emergent knowledge and critical evaluation in formulating and refining concept design options, including the exploration of three dimensional form and spatial quality.

PC 28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project

 
 

Moderator

XINYI WANG

Born in Beijing, Xinyi Wang earned his M.Arch degree from the University of Western Australia in Perth. His journey in architecture has taken him across the globe, with professional experiences in Australia, parts of Europe, Japan, and China. Xinyi has contributed to notable projects such as the Sydney Football Stadium, the Southbank by Beulah competitions in Melbourne, New Science Museum competition in Shenzhen and the Serpentine Pavilion in the UK. Beyond architecture, his public installation art has received international acclaim, with his latest work showcased in Portugal. Xinyi's creative spirit refuses to be confined to a single style, engaging in an eternal dialogue with himself, navigating the intricate pathways of thought and design. His approach blends sensitivity, poetry, research and rationale, enveloped in the enigmatic whispers of ambiguity. As a registered architect in NSW, Xinyi finds fascination in the oddities of daily existence, exploring these curiosities through a lens of inquiry, design, and bold experimentation. His architectural journey unfolds on a canvas both surreal and grounded, where imagination and professionalism seamlessly intertwine.

WANYU HE

Wanyu He is the founder and CEO of XKool Technology and LookX AI, and a former senior project architect at OMA. She attained an MSc in architecture and urban design from the Berlage Institute at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. She is currently a PhD candidate focusing on AI and architecture at Florida International University in Miami. She is an adjunct professor of the Master of Urban Design at the School of Architecture at the University of Hong Kong.

DR ALAN HUI

Dr Alan Hui is Director of Policy at A New Approach (ANA) and an author of Friend, foe or frenemy: Foreseeable impacts of AI on arts, culture and creativity. He brings a deep interest in public policy, inclusion and the arts. In the federal public service, he helped deliver copyright reforms and regional subsidies, and negotiate trade agreements with Australia’s major trading partners. At the Office of Impact Analysis, he supported public servants to improve evidence for major transport, communications and arts policies. Alan was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oslo, and his research explains how copyright law and platform regulation impacts how musicians make and share music. He has a long involvement in for-purpose organisations and the arts, including as a former Chair of Music for Canberra.

DR KAZJON GRACE
Senior Lecturer in the University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design, and Planning

Dr Kazjon (Kaz) Grace is a Senior Lecturer in the University of Sydney’s School of Architecture, Design, and Planning.  His research brings together what we know about human creativity and what might be possible in a generative AI future. Specifically, with his team at the Designing with AI Lab, he’s exploring how computers can be partners in the creative process rather than just tools, helping us develop, refine, and evaluate our ideas.
