Overview

This module explores:

  • Modelling early design decisions’ impact on the environmental, structural and materials performance optimisation.
  • Overview of the benefit of simulating and analysing environmental and energy performance, including carbon, information in early and concept stages of design.
  • Predicting carbon footprint via simulation and computational design tools – using cost-effective tools such as Karamba3D and the design modelling software combination of Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper. This will include live demonstrations using case-studies.
  • Predicting and minimising material waste using parametric workflows within Rhino/Grasshopper tools.
  • Platform workflows arming the designer with knowledge about the probable impacts for embodied and operational energy as the project progresses.
  • Live demonstration of Ladybug/Honeybee and Rhino/Grasshopper tools.
  • Demonstration of simple iteration/optimisation techniques.

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

Daniel Guiffre is a designer, researcher, and educator who specialises in Architectural Design Technology. Daniel is currently on the Australian Institute of Architects’ Digital Technology Committee and the Co-Founder of Intensive Fields Lab. Daniel specialises in creative applications of advanced generative and computational design and fabrication technologies, using Rhino & Grasshopper tools. He pursues cross-disciplinary collaborations, where his technical and theoretical expertise enables other designers and practitioners to realise their work.

COX

Tristan is the National Design Technology Innovation Lead of COX Architecture, an active member of the COX Futures Committee, COX Research Working Group, and coordinates COX National Computational Design Group. With a background in practice, teaching, and research, he is a passionate advocate for technological innovation nationally. The integration of emerging and innovative technology within practice is a key focus of his work, which is balanced against providing critical digital technology and computational support and advice to project teams.

Tristan received the WA Future Leader of the Year Design Award from the Property Council of Australia in 2019, and is a current member of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Digital Technology Committee.

ROSS DONALDSON


Ross Donaldson was CEO and Chairman of Woods Bagot from 2006-2016, leading the practice to its dramatic growth internationally to become the world’s 6th largest practice in 2014 and in 2016 the 7th “Most Admired” firm (WA100), judged by its international peers. He is a champion of the imperative for sustainable development and has presented numerous lectures internationally on sustainable models for cities and their liveability. In 2008 he established a partnership with Buro Happold to develop software for designing for zero emissions. Prior to joining Woods Bagot in 2001 he had his own small practice and taught at UWA.
