Embodied Carbon

5 Informal CPD Points
On Demand

Overview

The informal version of this course has been developed as a free resource to help all Australian architects, students and allied professionals navigate their way through the myriad of information already available around embodied carbon and identify pathways forward so they can do what they do best – apply their systems thinking and design skills to solving the massive shift needed in buildings of the future.

A 5 Point Formal CPD version of this course with the same content but an additional assessment component has also been developed Embodied Carbon - Formal

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants should be able to create the capacity to embed the consideration of embodied carbon into your practice and
team and embrace the potential for improved outcomes, with the ability to:

  • Understand the fundamentals of embodied carbon - explain the distinction between energy savings, energy use, carbon emissions and embodied carbon across a building's life.
  • Understand the issues, current limitations and future trends of embodied carbon, data, and whole of life building optimisation
  • Know how to access the tools that can support the technical and design practice understanding and application of embodied carbon strategies - NABERS, Green Star, LCA, EPD
  • Be able to integrate the potential of addressing the issues of embodied carbon in practice
  • Skills to be able to use design strategies to minimise the whole of life carbon impact of a project and consider regenerative and circular materials.

CAROLINE PIDCOCK
Director, Pidcock Pty Ltd

Caroline Pidcock is passionate about the importance of architecture, biophilia and regenerative design, and how they can contribute to a “culturally rich, socially just and ecologically restorative” future.

Her practice – PIDCOCK – has been inspired by the possibilities of creating beautiful places that demonstrate how the many issues that are fundamental to sustainability can be potent and profound influences. Her genuine interest and experience in sustainable built environments has been developed and enhanced through her involvement in a diverse range of professional, academic and community commitments.

2018 saw Caroline transitioning her practice (after 26 years) to another way of working, so that she can focus on how to strategically accelerate the uptake of regenerative ideas.

In addition to her own practice, other roles Caroline currently enjoys include being Spokesperson for Australian Architects Declare a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency; Chair of 1 Million Women; member of the Beyond Zero Emissions Advisory Committee; Member of the AIA Climate Action and Sustainability Taskgroup; Chair of the AIA Environment Design Guide Advisory Group; member of the Sydney Olympic Park Authority Design Review Panel, Liverpool Design Excellence Panel and Northern Beaches Design + Sustainability Panel. She is also teaching at a range of universities in NSW and a member of Sacred Heart Education Ministry Board.
