Outstanding work cultures engender outstanding work, driving attraction and retention of staff and clients alike. But how is such a culture established and nurtured?
Four practices awarded for their achievements in this space will present on how they have fostered a strong, unique culture and how it has benefited project outcomes and business performance.

Brian Clohessy - Head of People and Character, BVN
Brian Clohessy’s career path has taken him from architect, to project leader, to BVN’s Sydney Studio Director, through to his latest incarnation at BVN, as Head of People and Character. Brian’s 20 odd years practicing architecture, covers a diverse spectrum and scale of award-winning work, most recently as Project Director of the Marrickville Library and Community Hub project. Working with people and driving change within large architectural practices has led to his holistic approach to leadership, fostering a caring and supportive culture at BVN, one where everyone within the collective has a sense of purpose and place. Brian leads the development of the overall vision, strategy and structure for all things people-related at BVN. He has a special focus on mental wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, learning and development and people retention. Essentially Brian sees his role as maintaining BVN’s evolving culture based on human needs and aspirations which inevitably improves the collective’s wellbeing.
Diana Sarcasmo – General Manager, Mirvac Design
As General Manager of Mirvac Design, Diana leads a diverse team of professionals with expertise in architecture, interior design, urban design and graphic design. She is a registered architect with a Masters degree in Business Management and plays a pivotal role integrating design excellence across Mirvac development projects and its portfolio of commercial properties. Under Diana’s leadership, Mirvac Design has expanded its practice and become an increasingly important advocate for design principles that deliver positive urban design outcomes.
Tanya Awadallah – Practice Director, MHNDU
Tanya has a broad architectural background and over a decade of professional experience. As Practice Director she works closely with the Leadership Team developing and implementing systems and strategies that cater for our ever expanding practice. Her key responsibilities at MHNDU include managing operations, human resources, marketing, communications and our externally audited QSEMS. She is passionate about MHNDU’s role both as an innovative design practice and a force for positive social change in the community.
Shaun Carter – Principal, Carter Williamson Architects
Shaun is the founding architect of Carter Williamson Architects. Shaun came to architecture with a Structural Engineering degree and many years working in the construction industry. At Carter Williamson, Shaun is inspired by the wonderful colleagues he is fortunate to work with. The studio environment encourages wide-ranging conversations that broaden and strengthen everyone’s approach to architecture. As a student and practitioner, Shaun has received many awards for his work. Shaun believes we need to give back to the same architectural community that has afforded him and Carter Williamson the wonderful opportunities of education and critical thought. He has enacted this belief through his involvement in education and his active contribution to the Australian Institute of Architects, where he has held the role of NSW Chapter President, committee and forum member, and juror.
This presentation is equivalent to 2 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:
9.1 Knowledge and implementation of appropriate practice model to ensure efficient, effective and ethical professional service.
9.2 Knowledge and application of practice resources required to ensure efficient and effective professional service.
9.3 Identification and application of practice systems and quality management systems to facilitate efficient and timely delivery of architectural services in accordance with project objectives.
9.4 Establishment of project team and practice structures required to deliver the professional services in a timely manner.
9.6 Knowledge and application of professional ethics and ethical practices in respect to practice management and provision of professional service.
