Overview

Memories of Monuments: Seidler and Giurgola
The first session in the Culture of Australian Architecture Series will explore the remarkable parallel life and work of Harry Seidler and Romaldo Giurgola.

Penelope Seidler and Richard Thorp in a discussion chaired by Richard Francis-Jones will share their personal insights and experiences of working closely with these two great architects who developed contrasting and overlapping visions for Australian Architecture.

Penelope Seidler became an architect after she married Harry Seidler in 1958; she worked closely with him until his death in 2006, and she still heads the practice today.

Richard Thorp worked with Girugola in both Philadelphia and then New York where he led the Mitchell/Giurgola team for the New Australian Parliament House Competition. On winning the competition in 1980, Ric returned to Australia and led the project as a partner in the practice.

Richard Francis-Jones is the Design Director of Francis-Jones Carpenter and the author of ‘Truth and Lies in Architecture’
