The Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 and Regulation will effect major change for the construction industry, with significant implications for architects practising in NSW.

Co-hosted by Consult Australia and Engineers Australia, this panel brings together the Office of the Building Commissioner with representatives from key industry groups including architects, engineers and other consultants to walk through a sample design and construction project, explaining processes, roles and responsibilities under the new system.  

The session will include a Q&A session where audience members will have the opportunity to put questions directly to the panel.

Speakers

David Chandler OAM – NSW Building Commissioner


David Chandler OAM was appointed NSW Building Commissioner in 2019 after an impressive forty year career in the Australian construction industry. In his capacity as NSW Building Commissioner David is improving the quality of construction and restoring trust in the industry through leading the delivery of Construct NSW, in collaboration with the sector. David was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1989 for his services to the construction industry. 

Yin Man – Digital Director, Construct NSW, Office of the NSW Building Commissioner


Yin has over 20 years’ experience in driving digital transformation across financial, cultural and Government sectors. She is passionate about enabling real-time data and analytics to augment business capabilities and efficiency levels. Her previous experience includes leading the HealtheNet Program for eHealth to enable information sharing across hospitals, community health services, primary care and the national health record, myHealth. In her last role before joining the Office of the Building Commissioner, she led the replacement of NSW’s legacy child protection system.

Shomo Sen – Engineers Australia

Shomo is a business focused client side programs manager, energy efficiency expert and engineering specialist, with more than 18 years of experience in the Australian property management industry, including significant involvement and oversight in leading vision and strategy across design, construction, and facilities management divisions. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree from the University of New South Wales and a MBA (executive) from the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM). Shomo has held a number of senior positions in design/construction/client side roles including Scentre Group (Westfield) and ARUP.

Kingsley Lunt - Hendry Group (BCA Consultant/Certifier)

Nearing 20 years industry experience, Kingsley provides an extensive knowledge of Building Regulations and challenges we face in the built-environment today. An engaging speaker, Kingsley distils complicated regulations to provide practical insights that assist built-form stakeholders to develop safe & sustainable infrastructure. Passionate about building & fire safety, whilst also satisfying commercial & performance requirements, Kingsley places a focus on the ‘shared role’ of building health.

James Deters - Association of Certifiers Australian 

James is a registered Building Surveyor – Unrestricted, with over 15 years’ experience in the industry and a practising BCA/Access consultant. Over the years, James has worked on all classifications of buildings and of all complexities, in both private consultancy and for the public sector.  
He proudly sits as a Board Member of Association of Australian Certifiers and has done since 2017. As an industry stalwart and steward of the National Construction Code, James now relishes the opportunity to teach and mentor up and coming Building Surveyors and other partners in the industry.
