Date: Tuesday, 14 July 2026
Time: 6.00pm - 8.00pm (AEDT)
Location: NuSpace- Room X320, Corner of Hunter Street & Auckland Street, Newcastle NSW 2300

Overview

Over 25 years, DunnHillam has built a practice around a simple conviction: that architecture is an ethical act before it is an aesthetic one. Building Quietly reflects on what it means to design with care and consequence, where buildings answer to the communities and places that hold them. Drawing on recent and past projects across cultural, social, and heritage work, Ashley Dunn and Lee Hillam share an approach shaped less by signature than by attention, accountability, and restraint. This is a talk about how we practice, and why the quieter questions of architecture may be the ones that matter most.

Ashley Dunn & Lee Hillam
DunnHillam Architecture + Urban Design was established in Sydney in 2001 by Ashley Dunn and Lee Hillam. The practice specialises in cultural and social infrastructure, heritage adaptive reuse, and complex public buildings, with work grounded in genuine community accountability. DunnHillam is Australia's first BCorp-certified architecture practice, reflecting a longstanding commitment to environmental responsibility and climate-responsive design. The practice is led by founding principals Ashley Dunn FRAIA, Professor of Architectural Practice at the University of Sydney, and Lee Hillam FRAIA GAICD, Adjunct Professor at UTS and a member of the Australian Institute of Architects National Council.
