Overview

This module provides an outline and understanding of the principles of lump sum contracts with regard to financial aspects, how to manage changes to the works and the contract price, how to make payment for the works and keeping the client informed of costs during construction.

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

    2015 Competencies:

    Project Delivery: Construction Stage

    8.5 Identification and application of all relevant processes required for certification of monetary claims, project variations, extensions of time, project variations, extensions of time, project instructions or other administrative responsibilities under the contract provisions.

    2021 Competencies:

    Design Delivery and Construction Phase Services:

    PC 57 Be able to apply relevant processes required for certification of monetary progress claims, project variations, extensions of time, project instructions, and requests for information, practical completion or other administrative functions explicit in the selected procurement method and associated construction contract. 

     

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the upfront establishment of a building contract and the main components therein
  2. Outline the principles found in lump sum building contracts that relate to provisions for payments and contract price adjustments
  3. Demonstrate techniques and procedures associated with administering these provisions
  4. Understand some financial aspects related to contract administration
  5. Describe what happens after project completion

Ted is a registered architect in private practice for 20 years, mainly in residential architecture including private houses and medium density projects. He has been involved in teaching at UNSW in design for several years and more recently in professional practice.

Ashleigh has developed significant experience providing contract administration and pre-dispute assistance to clients, as well as advising and representing clients strategically, procedurally and on the merits in all forms of dispute resolution. Ashleigh is currently completing her Master of Laws at the University of New South Wales. Her studies have focused on her interests in construction law and forms of alternative dispute resolution, particularly negotiation, dispute boards and international mediation.
