Value Talk - Other Ways (Double Agents: Alternate Modes of Practice)

When: 21 May 2024
Time: 6 PM for 6:30 PM start - 8:30 PM
Where: Vacant Assembly
Address: 266 Montague Road, West End Queensland 4101

The first EmAGN Value Talk in our 2024 Agency Series, Other Ways (Double Agents: Alternative Modes of Practice, asks how else we can practice?

We have approached architecturally educated practitioners engaging in other ways of creative practice to share their progression to makers, doers and double agents. They will share how they got here, why they do it, the interconnection between architecture and allied practices and where they find value and future opportunities in alternative modes/other ways of practice.

The talk hopes to explore diversity in practice, shining a light on architects pursuing other ways of practice outside of traditional architectural practice.

Drinks and food will be provided, so come early for a catch up.

Dr Zuzanna Kovar

Zuzana Kovar is an academic and practitioner. She established zuzana&nicholas with Nicholas Skepper in 2013 as a multidisciplinary practice that engages in architecture, arts practice, architectural research and education. The practice has been recognised for exemplary work in residential architecture, particularly for sensitive adaptations, renovations and extensions to traditional housing.

Zuzana holds a PhD from the RMIT School of Architecture and Design, which was published as a monograph in 2017. Her theoretical research is interested in the notion of bodily boundaries and more broadly the conversations around bodies and spaces within the fields of architecture, philosophy, art and film. She holds a lecturing appointment at Griffith University, where she teaches design and contemporary theory.

Dirk Yates

Speculative Architecture is a multi-disciplinary studio practice, led by Dirk Yates, that specialises in the design and delivery of public buildings, exhibition design, and integrated artworks. The practice enjoys collaboratively developing designs to develop ideas and enhance opportunities for enjoyment beyond simple building functions. Their interest in contributing to the community is to produce venues and experiences that are both distinctive and ambitious in achieving the goals of the community.

Laura Patterson

Laura is a figurative expressionist painter and architectural graduate who likes paint, good spaces, teaching, and making things.

In all work across architecture and visual art Laura is intrigued by different means of communication + the honing of skill ~ while examining the way that constituent parts of a place/object can be felt, experienced, understood + appreciated with greater clarity when they are assembled knowingly with conviction and practise.

Laura will share the multiple facets of her design practice, from visual art and teaching to architectural practice and private design/build projects.

Chris Miller

Studio Flek is situated on the traditional lands of the Kombumerri people within the Yugambeh region. Led by couple Lisa and Chris Miller, both of whom work full-time in separate architecture practices, in turn, Studio Flek serves as an exploratory creative outlet for the pair.

Their work is rooted in materiality and the organic evolution of ideas through the process of making. Currently, they are exploring the repurposing of waste materials into functional objects, often resulting in one-off pieces of furniture or lighting.

Collaboration forms a critical part of their practice. They often seek out the opportunity to collaborate with clients, designers, artists, architects, and artisans, leveraging collective wisdom to refine and hone every project. Their passion lies not in flashy marketing slogans but in the quiet satisfaction of meaningful creation.
