EmAGN Value Talk: Building Resilience

Vacant Assembly
266 Montague Road, West End Queensland 4101

Overview

The fourth EmAGN Value Talk in our 2023 Resilience Series, Building Resilience, will explore what makes buildings resilient and how to increase the resilience of existing and new buildings. The speakers will share ways of maximising the lifespan of existing built forms and materials, minimising the use of non-renewable resources, and allowing for future adaptive reuse or deconstruction. They will discuss how to reduce embodied and operational carbon, while increasing resilience to climate change, with the aim of providing tools to allow new work to be done more mindfully.

Speaker 1: Dr Paul Matthew

Our first speaker for 2023 Value Talk Building Resilience is Dr Paul Matthew - Lecturer in Design (Built Environment), School of Architecture, Design and Planning, The University of Queensland.

Paul is an architect and academic based in Meanjin / Brisbane with expertise in life cycle assessment, building stock analysis, construction material lifespans, thermal comfort and indoor air quality.

Paul’s current research interests include the whole lifecycle environmental impacts of multi-residential buildings in South East Queensland, and actions architects, planners and building owners can take to reduce these impacts. As an academic at @uqadp_, he researches how to reduce both embodied and operational carbon in existing and new buildings, supervises Masters level research on quantifying environmental performance, and teaches architectural technology to undergraduate students.

Paul is also a registered architect, with experience working at a wide range of scales in South East Queensland.

Speaker 2: Clare Kennedy

Our second speaker for 2023 Value Talk Building Resilience is Clare Kennedy, Director and Architect, Five Mile Radius.

Clare Kennedy is an architect and the director of design studio Five Mile Radius.  Five Mile Radius is a Brisbane-based research, design and manufacturing studio exploring a future based on natural and recycled construction materials. Founded in 2016, the studio delivers work that imagines a world built on a respect for material resources. The practice works with low carbon bio-based materials such as timbers, earth and stone, as well as construction waste and salvaged materials.

Speaker 3: Alessandra Moschella

Our third speaker for 2023 Value Talk Building Resilience is Alessandra Moschella, Senior Associate at BVN

Alessandra is a talented designer who has worked on a number of projects internationally and locally. She is respected by her peers and clients, understanding complex project needs during all phases of the design process. At BVN, she played a key role in documenting Quay Quarter Tower (with 3XN and executive architect BVN), resolving complex challenges of transforming the original building and completing tender documentation. 3XN and BVN worked on QQT for almost a decade, with Alessandra assisting with coordinating construction to its completion in 2022.

Speaker 4: Callum Senjov

Our fourth speaker for 2023 Value Talk Building Resilience is Callum Senjov, Architect, Architectus Conrad Gargett (and EmAGN Co-chair).

Callum is an Architect at Architectus Conrad Gargett and Co-Chair of EmAGN QLD.  His work ranges in breadth from large, international projects to regional, temporary builds, including the LEED and WELL Gold Misk Foundation Centre.  In his role on the National AIA Climate Action and Sustainability Committee and as EmAGN Co-Chair, Callum advocates for young architects and designers to have the agency and knowledge to create a resilient and equitable future.

Speaker 5: Yolandé Vorster

Our fifth speaker for 2023 Value Talk Building Resilience is Yolandé Vorster, Architect, Architectus Conrad Gargett (and EmAGN committee member).

Yolande is a heritage architect with experience in the conservation and adaptive reuse of culturally significant buildings. She has a particular interest in understanding how built fabric is impacted over time, and what can be done to increase the lifespan of both existing and new materials. She has undertaken research into paint removal techniques, paint types, brickwork repairs, repointing and plastering, timber repairs and concrete cancer, and has deepened her knowledge by attending practical and theory-based building conservation workshops at Longford Academy in Tasmania. Yolande is focused on making buildings more resilient, designing for longevity, reuse.

Yolande is part of the EmAGN QLD committee, a member of Australia ICOMOS, and is a sessional academic at UQ.
