Overview

Join us in Townsville for a substantial CPD event bringing together four insightful sessions tailored to contemporary architectural practice. Dr Mark Jones LFRAIA will present Success in Architectural Practice, drawing on research and practical insights from his new book exploring the three pillars of a successful practice: excellence, happiness and profit, with a particular focus on finance and management. Caroline Bell of Bondor Metecno and Duygu Tany of BlueScope will present a Refuel CPD - Smart Building Solutions Made for the Australian Built Environment, offering practical guidance on insulated sandwich panels and Cool Roofing, including composition, compliance, BIM, handling and installation in challenging Australian conditions. Planned Cover's Lisa Wastell-Anthony will round out the program with a session on contracts and consultancy agreements in architectural practice.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the foundations of success in architectural practice
  • Define the positioning of an architectural practice
  • Strategize for fee setting and claiming fee variations
  • Understand in detail how to benchmark for wages, overheads and profit
  • Understand the principles of management for a successful architectural practice
  • Reflect on one practical principle from the lecture that can be applied in their own practice

Learning Outcomes - Insulated Sandwich Panel: Composition, BIM & Installation

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the different manufacturing processes and quality assurance aspects for ISP
  • Articulate why PIR chemistry is different and how it assists performance
  • Identify BIM options with ISP and a ready reckoner for NCC fire compliance
  • Assess site requirements for delivery, storage, handling of ISP
  • Explain installation essentials for a range of install types – such as FRL, FM Approved, Temperature Controlled Environments and IPCA Code of Practice.

Learning Outcomes - Cool Roofing CPD- design considerations for energy efficiency & thermal comfort.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain how Cool Roofing contributes to a more sustainable built environment in relation to the NCC and Green Star
  • Integrate Cool Roofing material solutions into the design response to mitigate heat island effects and improve thermal comfort.
  • Assess how Cool Roofing solutions effectively reduce energy consumption.
  • Review and determine the economic benefits of Cool Roofing solutions. 

Learning Outcomes - Contracts and Consultancy Agreements

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the legal requirements for forming a contract.
  • Identify some kinds of contractual liability that are likely to be excluded from cover under professional indemnity insurance policies.
  • Have strategies for approaching a contractual negotiation.
