Michael Keniger
Chair of Juries
Michael Keniger has had a distinguished three-decade career at the The University of Queensland, serving in senior academic and leadership roles including Professor of Architecture, Head of the Department of Architecture, Executive Dean, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor. He later supported Bond University as Professor and interim head of the Abedian School of Architecture. Named Queensland Architect of the Year in 1998, he also served as Queensland Government Architect from 1999 to 2006, advising on major urban and architectural projects, and contributed to the development of South Bank Corporation as both a design adviser and board member.
Paul Hotston
Deputy Chair of Juries
Paul Hotston leads the team at Phorm Architecture + Design, working across architectural projects of varying scales throughout Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs and regional Queensland, including coastal and inland communities. His practice focuses on creating architecture with strong local identity, developing site-responsive projects that respond to and celebrate place by carefully shaping the relationship between people, landscape, and cultural context. The practice is also collaborating with Blaklash on projects in remote and semi-remote communities, including the development of design guidelines for social housing and community buildings.
Ellen Buttrose
State Juror
Ellen Buttrose is an architect focused on city-shaping and design approaches that respond to diverse cultures, climates, and communities. In 2024, she was appointed Cairns’ first City Architect, a strategic role that connects design thinking with policy and delivery to help shape the city’s future. She has worked across regional and remote Queensland, as well as in Adelaide and Melbourne, with practices and organisations including Six Degrees Architects, People Oriented Design, and the Office for Design and Architecture SA. Her professional recognition includes the Queensland Emerging Architect Prize in 2020 and the National Dulux Study Tour Prize in 2023.
Melody Chen
State Juror
Melody Chen is co-founder of Brisbane-based practice Atelier Chen Hung, where she leads projects across a range of scales and typologies with a focus on site-specific, conceptually rigorous design that engages with landscape, culture, and human experience. The practice has received national and international recognition, including selection in Wallpaper* magazine’s Architects Directory of the world’s top emerging practices. Recent work includes Mapleton House, which was commended in the UK Architectural Review’s AR House Awards and received the 2025 Robin Dods Award for Residential Architecture from the Australian Institute of Architects. She also contributes to architectural education as a tutor and guest critic at The University of Queensland and Bond University, and regularly participates in award juries and public talks, bringing a cross-cultural perspective informed by her background in Taiwan.
