Overview:  The site is a physical environment and certainly no place for the feint-hearted. It can be a tough place for young architects. Intimidating and even scary at times. The nice clean, straight, neat drawings that we all love to make can quickly become lost in a stew of imprecision and uncertainty and seemingly minor errors can cause major headaches. Not all of us make it to the final siren. ‘Wide open’ is the football term. The etymology of the word architect – ‘arch’ meaning ‘head’ or ‘chief’ and ‘tecton,’ ‘builder,’ suggests that the site is our home ground, our turf. In all but a few instances now, however, procurement models have reduced and even removed altogether our roles as inspectors and administrators. Often nowadays architects work for builders, rather than our clients. Our profession now regularly wrestles for relevancy on site and yet the value that we can bring to our clients and the community throughout the construction phase of any project is immeasurable. The pleasure of working with a committed team of builders, artisans, consultants and patrons to achieve a successful piece of architecture is unparalleled. As young practitioners, our careers can be forged on site - we just have to make it through all four quarters uninjured and finish the game. To do this we need our older team mates to look out for us. - Sean Godsell March 2023.
