The Vault - The Golden Age of Hand Drawing

The Golden Age of Hand Drawing

23 May 2024
6.00pm -9.00 pm

Brickworks in their showroom at 367 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Overview

There was once a time where the majority of work delivered by architects was drawn by hand. These days are long gone with digital documentation being used exclusively by the vast majority of architects. Hand drawing is still a foundational tool for architects, with quick sketches being the fastest way to convey an idea to their colleagues or clients alike. "The Golden Age of Hand Drawing" will see some of Victoria's most prolific architects talk about when hand drawing ruled the architecture studio and how drawing has evolved since the implementation of digital design.  "The Vault" is a unique program designed to showcase the evolution of architectural documentation over the years, from 1947 to the present day. We are inviting architecture firms to submit their archived documentation packages, providing insight into the changing practices and techniques used in architectural documentation. The program will feature a curated library of drawings, starting with the drawings produced by Robin Boyd's "Small Homes Service" in 1947, and spanning to contemporary documentation practices. This exhibition will offer design practitioners and the public a rare opportunity to explore the evolution of architectural documentation firsthand.

Geoff Saunders FRAIA

Peter Johnson
 FRAIA

Retiring from active practice in 2009, Peter turned his interest to architectural collections, working as a consultant to various private and public institutions giving collection valuation advice. As an approved valuer for the Australian Government’s Cultural Gifts Program (CGP) this gives donors of culturally important objects significant tax advantages. His clients include state libraries, universities, architectural practices and private individuals. Peter also works one day a week as a Collections Volunteer at the State Library of Victoria listing and describing  drawings to assist in the creation of catalogue finding aids. Collections worked on so far include those from the practices of Geoffrey Sommers, H Vivian Taylor & Soilleux, Oakley & Parkes, and Peter McIntyre.

Eli Giannini
 LFRAIA

The G in MGS Architects, Eli joined the practice in 1989 to lead design. Her vision of architects as central to the design of the built environment, and as its champions and storytellers, has been instrumental to MGS’ success. Eli thrives on navigating the many complex and varied ‘realities’ inherent in every project, making a virtue of the competing priorities architects face and their implications for the built environment. Under her design leadership MGS Architects has won many industry awards and was selected to participate repeatedly in the Australian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, at Tarrawarra Museum of Art and at RMIT Gallery Storey Hall.
