Documenting and Designing for Country

30 May 2024
6.00pm -9.00 pm

Brickworks in their showroom at 367 Collins Street, Melbourne.

Overview

Designing for Country is an architectural approach that recognises the unique knowledge and ways of being of Aboriginal people. Architects across the country have begun to engage in this process and the benefits can already been felt on key project examples such as the University of Melbourne’s Student Precinct. Join us for an engaging presentation with Jefa Greenaway, one of Australia’s leading First Nations architects, focused on the vital topic of documenting the architectural process when designing for Country. This event will bring together architects, community members, and industry experts to explore best practices, challenges, and opportunities in documenting the architectural journey with respect to Indigenous living and physical heritage. Attendees will gain valuable insights into the importance of documenting the architectural process in a way that honours and respects Indigenous knowledge, values, and traditions. Jefa will share his experiences, lessons learned, and innovative approaches to integrating Indigenous perspectives into architectural documentation. Whether you're an architect, urban planner, or anyone interested in promoting culturally sensitive and sustainable design practices, this presentation offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding and expand your toolkit for designing for Country.

"The Vault" is a unique program designed to showcase the evolution of architectural documentation over the years, from 1947 to the present day. We are inviting architecture firms to submit their archived documentation packages, providing insight into the changing practices and techniques used in architectural documentation. The program will feature a curated library of drawings, starting with the drawings produced by Robin Boyd's "Small Homes Service" in 1947, and spanning to contemporary documentation practices. This exhibition will offer design practitioners and the public a rare opportunity to explore the evolution of architectural documentation firsthand.
