Research into Practice: Modern Methods of Construction

In this CPD session, Industrialised Construction otherwise known as Modern Methods of Construction  (MMC) will be presented through the lens of Building 4.0 CRC – a Commonwealth-funded, collaborative industry and academic research hub that since 2021 has executed more than 80 research projects under the broad umbrella of “Industry 4.0” and its potential to transform building through increased digitalisation, industrialisation, sustainability and new ways of working. In the context of the national focus upon housing targets, affordability, workforce capacity and other imperatives, this session will provide an in-depth look at the MMC-related work of Building 4.0 CRC and its partners in government and industry. This includes the development of new building systems, regulatory change, skills, training and educational initiatives, and new business models. Architects and designers attending this session can learn about the opportunities to help lead in the national adoption of MMC as one of the means to address the productivity, quality, and environmental and social sustainability of our built environment.

NSCA 2021 Performance Criteria

This session will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects:

PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT

  • PC9: Be able to apply contemporary and emerging building procurement methods. This involves identifying the most appropriate form of delivery for a project, including risks, mitigation and adaptation strategies, and integrating appropriate construction contracts and consultancy contracts and/or agreements.
  • PC11: Be able to assess, recommend and/or select an appropriate procurement process, with consideration for its impact on all phases of a project – including design, documentation and project delivery – and provide advice to the client in terms of the level of scope of service for consultants.

PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

  • PC24: Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.

DETAILED DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTATION

  • PC39: Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation.
  • PC43: Be able to collaborate with nominated contractors early in the documentation process to identify key construction methodology opportunities and constraints.

DESIGN DELIVERY AND CONSTRUCTION PHASE SERVICES

  • PC53: Be able to provide advice to clients on the impact of a selected procurement method on cost, time, life cycle implications and quality control during the construction phase

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Apply an understanding, including the wider regulatory context, of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) to project procurement.
  • Consider the appropriateness of MMC for various projects, weighing the advantages, limitations, and hurdles.
  • Apply an understanding of volumetric modular construction and kit of parts construction to design and documentation.
  • Explore opportunities for architects to lead MMC delivery through design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) and conduct further research to advise on the implications to clients.
