Overview

Through case studies of claims, the legally qualified Risk Managers from informed by Planned Cover will discuss an architect’s duty of care when it comes to briefing and specifications, and look at ways to reduce the risks of errors and claims.

This presentation is equivalent to 2 hours/points of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

Design: Project Briefing 
1.4  Identification of factors that may impact on client project requirements and objectives.
1.7 Preparation of project brief for approval by client and relevant stakeholders.

Design: Pre-Design
2.4 Analysis of project brief in relation to clients objective budget and timeframe.
2.6 Preparation and analysis of project development options in response to project brief.

Documentation: Documentation 
6.3 Incorporation of the project requirements and objectives in accordance with Project Brief and approved Detailed Design.

2021 Competencies:

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 22 Be able to assess project budget and timeframe against project requirements and objectives, relevant legislation, statutory planning requirements, building codes and standards. 
PC 23 Be able to prepare a return brief for approval by the client and relevant stakeholders in response to a client brief and any areas of deviation or non-compliance. 
PC 24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations. 

 


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Identity common errors in the briefing process to avoid risks and improve outcomes
  • Evaluate and improve contract clauses regarding briefing obligations
  • Identify and define common pitfalls in specification writing
  • On each project, define and fulfil the architect’s role with respect to specification

    WENDY POULTON

    Risk Manager, informed by Planned Cover

    Wendy has been a Risk Manager since 2005, providing plain English advice on consultancy agreements, training consultants in risk management, and creating guidance materials on emerging challenges in the construction industry. She has lectured on insurance and risk management at RMIT and the University of Melbourne.

    Previously, Wendy was a solicitor in the Commercial and Insurance Litigation section of Hunt and Hunt. She was admitted as a solicitor in 1997, and completed a Masters in Construction Law in 2011.
