This seminar explores the in-between spaces often found in the architecture of Moreau Kusunoki; between two buildings there is a space open to possibilities, where exchange and life happens. The appropriation of this in-between space by the users is the sign of a building’s success. Nicolas Moreau and Hiroko Kusunoki talk about the history and philosophy of their practice and showcase their 1st prize-winning entry in the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition. They discuss the intersection of cultures and how to design cultural public spaces accordingly – as people and their culture ultimately complete the architecture.

Overview

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

2021 Competencies:

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations. 
PC 29 Be able to develop and evaluate design options in terms of the heritage, cultural and community values embodied in the site, and in relation to project requirements. 

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation:
PC 36 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, emergent knowledge, critical evaluation and continued engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to produce a coherent project design. This should be resolved in terms of supporting health and wellbeing outcomes for Country, site planning, formal composition, spatial planning and circulation as appropriate to the project brief and all other factors affecting the project. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Explain how the analysis of the intersection of cultures can inform the design of cultural public spaces.
  • Define the “in between” spaces found in the architecture of Moreau Kusunoki and to examine the possibilities these spaces provide.
  • Explain how the appropriation of in-between spaces by users can contribute to the perception of a building’s success.

    NICHOLAS MOREAU AND HIROKO KUSUNOKI

    Co-directors - Moreau Kusunoki Architectes France

    Established in Paris in 2011, Moreau Kusunoki Architectes inserted itself discreetly into the roster of young architects in France. The duo behind the practice – Hiroko Kusunoki, from Japan, and Nicolas Moreau, from France – put forward the cultural duality in all of the produced projects after gaining invaluable experiences in Japan under SANAA, Shigeru Ban and Kengo Kuma. In the belief that architecture is best conceived in reserve and introspection, the firm instills in each of its projects poetic visions and a sensitive approach to the use of different scales in its design methodology. Particularly valuing the growth of architecture stemming from the infinitesimal scale of materiality and haptics to the urban scale.

    In June 2015, Moreau Kusunoki was awarded 1st prize in the Guggenheim Helsinki Design Competition. Most recently the firm’s work includes the 1st prize design for Sciences Po in Paris and the construction of the plaza for the Paris High Court.
