This seminar will provide a refresher on the work health and safety legislation in relation to designer responsibilities and discuss how designers can achieve a safe design approach in their projects. The focus will include what designers should endeavour to eliminate from the workplace and design innovations which can create productive workplaces free from injury and disease. The seminar will address methods of communicating safe design in documents, plans and reports to ensure that design intent is not lost in the build process.

Overview

This seminar will provide a refresher on the work health and safety legislation in relation to designer responsibilities and discuss how designers can achieve a safe design approach in their projects. The focus will include what designers should endeavour to eliminate from the workplace and design innovations which can create productive workplaces free from injury and disease.

The seminar will address methods of communicating safe design in documents, plans and reports to ensure that design intent is not lost in the build process.

 

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 2 hours/points of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

Design: Conceptual Design
3.4 Design response incorporates assessment of relevant legislation, codes and industry standards.

Design: Schematic Design
4.5 Investigation and integration of appropriate structural, construction, service and transport systems in the project design.

Documentation: Documentation 
6.1 Identification and adoption of a strategy, program and process of documentation integrated through all project stages to enable project delivery.
6.5 Nomination of quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings components and systems.

2021 Competencies:

Practice Management and Professional Conduct:
PC 13 Be able to identify and apply strategies, programming and processes for documentation through all project stages to facilitate project delivery, as appropriate to selected procurement processes. 

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 32 Be able to apply planning principles and statutory planning requirements to the site and conceptual design of the project.

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation:
PC 45 Be able to nominate and integrate quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings, components and systems, considering the impact on Country and the environment, and the whole life carbon impact of the project. This includes integrating life cycle assessments and other expertise and advice from consultants.

Design Delivery and Construction Phase Services:
PC 48 Be able to select and implement project administration systems, based upon an assessment of the selected procurement method and its implications on project delivery.
PC 55 Be able to apply appropriate and consistent systems for record keeping, document control and revision status during the construction phase.
PC 56 Be able to apply appropriate and consistent systems for record keeping, document control and revision status during the construction phase.
PC 57 Be able to apply relevant processes required for certification of monetary progress claims, project variations, extensions of time, project instructions, and requests for information, practical completion or other administrative functions explicit in the selected procurement method and associated construction contract. 

 

 


 


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Understand health and safety legislation relating to designers
  • Identify workplace hazards and their harmful effects. What should designers target to eliminate from the built environment?
  • Develop design innovation to facilitate health and productivity of workers
  • Understand facilitation of safety in design reviews
  • Identify different approaches to documenting “unusual or atypical features” in design.

    Deborah Hammond and OHS Solutions have been at the forefront of providing Safety in Design Services since the concept became a legal reality in 2011.  As the initial creator of the Safety in Design course for Sydney University and Consult Australia, she has been providing advice to the construction industry on implementation within legal guidelines, and best practice applications.

    Deborah has been a consultant on a number of significant projects including The Star redevelopment; Lifehouse at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital; Biological Sciences and Science and Engineering at University of New South Wales; Charles Perkins Centre at University of Sydney; Port Botany Expansion and Green Square Library.  She has facilitated design reviews on a large number of new hospital builds and redevelopments.  She has also assisted a number of firms with their Safety in Design procedures and has conducted training in the topic across Australia.
