Masterclass: NCC Section J – Unpacked and Demystified: 1 & 2

Note

Session 1 (4 CPD points) can also be accessed as a stand-alone purchase here.

Overview

This CPD Masterclass addresses the challenges architects are experiencing in relation to Section J of the NCC.

Part 1 is a series of recorded presentations unpacking Section J overall. It considers case studies in different climate zones, discusses thermal bridging unpacks the difference between Performance Solutions and Deemed to Satisfy.

Presenters are architects, environmental consultants and a façade engineer who will consider a more detailed examination of thermal bridging. An architect will discuss how to successfully collaborate with an environmental consultant, at what stage of a project to engage an environmental consultant and what information is required for an appropriate brief.

Part 2 is a Workshop designed to further demystify Section J and includes an architect discussing with the environmental consultant on the challenges of a particular project, a demonstration of the façade calculator and a Q&A discussion with the panel. The forwarded questions will be answered, and live questions will also be taken if time permits.

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 6 hours/points of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies

Design: Project Briefing
1.4 Identification of factors that may impact on client project requirements and objectives.

Design: Conceptual Design
3.3 Design response incorporates assessment of the physical location and relevant wider regional, contextual and environmental issues.
3.4 Design response incorporates assessment of relevant legislation, codes and industry standards.
3.7 Assessment and integration of construction systems and materials consistent with project brief.

Design: Schematic Design
4.6 Investigation and integration of appropriate material selection for the project design.

Documentation: Detailed Design
5.3 Evaluation and integration of regulatory requirements.
5.5 Integration of materials and components based upon an understanding of their physical properties.

2021 Competencies

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design
PC 29 Be able to develop and evaluate design options in terms of the heritage, cultural and community values embodied in the site, and in relation to project requirements.
PC 32 Be able to apply planning principles and statutory planning requirements to the site and conceptual design of the project.

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation
PC 39 Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation.
PC 45 Be able to nominate and integrate quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings, components and systems, considering the impact on Country and the environment, and the whole life carbon impact of the project. This includes integrating life cycle assessments and other expertise and advice from consultants.
PC 46 Be able to produce project documentation that meets the requirements of the contract and procurement process and complies with regulatory controls, building standards and codes, and conditions of construction and planning approvals.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session you should be able to:

  • Explain the key components of NCC2019 Section J which contribute to its central aim of reducing energy consumption by 30 to 40 percent.
  • Integrate and effectively use the NCC 2019 Façade calculator in your practice.
  • Incorporate current knowledge of thermal bridging & spandrel glazing into your fabric assessments.
  • Demonstrate an active awareness that energy consumption (kWh) is now expressed as GHG emissions.
  • Consider Section J at the early design stages, employing your knowledge of its requirements for facade design, feasibility and specification as they apply to your key design objectives.
  • Discuss the best time to engage a specialist consultant, the best way to brief your consultant and what information do you need for briefing your consultant?
