Award-winning architect Jon Jacka will share his experience as an entrant in the award process. Seasoned juror and award-winning architect Georgina Wilson will provide insight into the process from the dual perspectives of entrant and juror. Katherine Lu will discuss the art of architectural photography and give practical guidance about selecting the right photographer for your project, shaping your brief to them and preparing the project for a professional shoot.

In this insightful CPD event you will hear from key experts about best practice approaches to:

This presentation is equivalent to 2 hours/points of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

Practice Management and Professional Conduct:
PC 7 Apply and follow processes for clear and consistent communication with clients and relevant stakeholders throughout the project, including obtaining approvals from clients and stakeholders.  

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 18 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, research, emergent knowledge and critical evaluation in formulating and refining concept design options, including the exploration of three dimensional form and spatial quality. 
PC 29 Be able to develop and evaluate design options in terms of the heritage, cultural and community values embodied in the site, and in relation to project requirements. 

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation:
PC 36 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, emergent knowledge, critical evaluation and continued engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to produce a coherent project design. This should be resolved in terms of supporting health and wellbeing outcomes for Country, site planning, formal composition, spatial planning and circulation as appropriate to the project brief and all other factors affecting the project. 
PC 39 Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation. 
PC 45 Be able to nominate and integrate quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings, components and systems, considering the impact on Country and the environment, and the whole life carbon impact of the project. This includes integrating life cycle assessments and other expertise and advice from consultants






Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  1. Explain the intended purpose of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Awards.
  2. Diagnose your audience effectively, so you understand their perspective.
  3. Describe the jury process and the responsibilities of jurors.
  4. List the considerations for achieving an excellent photographic survey and the optimum opportunities for this.
  5. Provide the do’s and don’ts of a successful presentation to jurors.
  6. Identify and outline the areas of presentation on which they will have to hone their skills. 
  7. Suggest ways that could leverage an entry into the Awards to promote their practice.

JON JACKA

Jon Jacka is a Sydney-based architect with over 20 years local and international experience. Jon has worked both as a sole practitioner and for some of the most accomplished local architecture practices. He has extensive experience on projects at all scales of architecture and urban design. His experience includes theatre and exhibition design, medical research and health facilities, education buildings, sport facilities, heritage, hospitality, large-scale masterplanning, multi-unit residential projects and single houses. 

Jon has had an instrumental role on many award-winning projects including Project Architect on the Westmead Millennium Institute that received the Sulman Medal in 2015. In 2018, Jon Jacka Architects received the Hugh and Eva Buhrich Award (AIA NSW Chapter Awards) and Eleanor Cullis Hill Award (AIA National Awards) for Laneway House.

KATHERINE LU

Katherine Lu is an architectural photographer based in Sydney. After studying both interior design and photography, Katherine spent her early career as a photographic assistant, mentored by various architectural photographers, before fully committing to her own practice.

Over the last ten years, Katherine has photographed a wide range of residential and commercial architecture projects in and outside of Sydney, from micro apartments to large public buildings. Her work is regularly published in magazines, books and online.

Katherine's area of interest is in small spaces - how thoughtful, functional design can be sustainable and effective even given the constraints.

GEORGINA WILSON

Georgina Wilson, the Director of Georgina Wilson Architect, brings almost 20 years’ experience in design across residential and commercial projects. 

GWA has received multiple commendations for her projects including George Chaloupka Award for Interior Architecture for the Paspalis Business Centre, Darwin, and the NSW shortlist for the Focus Eye Centre, Sydney.

She has also been a AIA NSW Jury member (Commercial) as well as Jury member, and most recently Chair of the Newcastle awards 2019.

ALISON CARTER

Alison is a Chartered Accountant with over 25 years of blue-chip corporate experience, including senior investor communication roles. 

She has also established several companies of her own, including a legal contracting consultancy and provided counselling services within the not-for-profit sector.
Delivering leadership and communication programs around the world, the combination of Alison’s financial background and her communication and facilitation experience enables her to bring a disciplined, process-oriented approach with some creative flair. 

She understands the importance of strong communication and financial acumen for leaders and believes operating with authenticity and empathy is critical in the future of work.
