Overview

This CPD session (1 formal points) showcases current research from the University of Wellington, University of Western Australia and Deakin University will discuss a variety of issues related to sustainability and research.:

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

Design

1.2 Establishment, analysis and evaluation of client project requirements and objectives.
1.4 Identification of factors that may impact on client project requirements and objectives.
3.1 Design response integrates the objectives of brief, user intent and built purpose
4.6 Investigation and integration of appropriate material selection for the project design.
4.7 Coordination and integration of appropriate environmental systems, including for thermal comfort, lighting and acoustics.

2021 Competencies:

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 19 Be able to identify, analyse and evaluate client project requirements and objectives using qualitative and quantitative methods and, where required by the terms of engagement, to assist cost estimators in determining project feasibility/viability.
PC 24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.
PC 33 Be able to investigate, coordinate and integrate sustainable environmental systems – including water, thermal, lighting and acoustics – in response to consultants’ advice.

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation:
PC 39 Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation.
PC 45 Be able to nominate and integrate quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings, components and systems, considering the impact on Country and the environment, and the whole life carbon impact of the project. This includes integrating life cycle assessments and other expertise and advice from consultants.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:
Evaluate comfort and its limitations reflected by standards, certifications, and building codes
Explore how comfort models can inform building design
Determine the impact of residential building design and planning densities on pollution of aquatic ecosystems.
List current and future environmental trends in the residential housing market.
Describe typologies of Adaptive Facades and their differences

Master of Ceremonies

DR REBECCA MCLAUGHLAN

University of Newcastle

Dr Rebecca McLaughlan is an Australian Research Council DECRA Research Fellow based at the University of Newcastle. Her work looks at the relationship between the built environment and user wellbeing within healthcare facilities design, across palliative and end-of-life care, mental health, oncology and paediatric healthcare. It is motived by the suspicion that during times of intense vulnerability architecture has the most profound effect.

Speaker

GERMÁN MOLINA

Victoria University of Wellington

Germán comes from Chile, where he studied Mechanical Engineering and a Master of Engineering Sciences. His Master research focused on the simulation of complex dynamic facades, integrating thermal and daylighting aspects. His practice as a Freelance Consultant made Germán's interests migrate from the Physical to the Human aspects of Building Science, integrating this discipline with Economics, Real Estate, Psychology and Behavioural Sciences. Specifically, his current PhD research stresses the need for new and more qualitative conceptual frameworks and methods for driving our building design, assessment and commercialization.

Speaker

KATIA DEFENDI

University ofWestern Australia

Katia is a Western Australian Registered Architect with 20 years experience focusing on residential developments and sustainable design. She is completing a PhD in Environmental Architecture with a strong Hydro-Ecological Engineering influence. Prior to her post-graduate studies, she worked as a Project Architect, Construction Contracts Administrator, Energy Efficiency Evaluator, and Green Star Assessor.

Speaker

AMIR TABADKANI

Deakin University

Since finishing M.Sc. in Architectural Engineering from Milan Polytechnic University in 2015, Amir has wasted no time in securing strong experience towards delivering sustainable design solutions and has been involved in industry across a diverse range of responsibilities for four years. He gained significant and broad-ranging experiences in giving advices towards energy-efficient buildings and thermally-comfortable indoor environments at early stages of design. Currently, Amir is a third-year PhD student at Deakin University, in which his research relies on his previous experiences focusing on developing a simulation-based control strategy for non-conventional adaptive facades to enhance users comfort performance alongside improving the energy consumption. To date, Amir invented a prototype in United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and published several journal papers in this specific field.
