The Liveable Housing Australia Design Guidelines are increasingly being referred to by local planning authorities. Clare Paterson will discuss how their application has been used in various housing situations and the steps required to have a project LHA Certified.

With a focus on the acute hospital environment, Ellie Newman will give you a better understanding on how dementia can affect the way a person experiences and interacts with the built environment. The seminar will be an interactive experience session’ that will engage and enlighten attendees on what it is like to live with dementia or reduced abilities along with highlighting design changes that can enable them to maintain independence. Two volunteers will wear an ageing suit to demonstrate the impact of ageing on the body and be able to experience the visual, hearing and physical disabilities than can accompany old age and dementia.

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

Design
1.4 Identification of factors that may impact on client project requirements and objectives.
4.2 Evaluation of design options against values of physical, environmental and cultural contexts.
4.4 Inclusion of expertise of relevant specialists and consultants in developing the project design. 

2021 Competencies:

Practice Management and Professional Conduct:
PC 12 Provide independent, culturally responsive and objective advice in accordance with relevant building codes, standards, technical specifications and guidelines, and planning regulations, including climate change implications, across all aspects of architectural practice.

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 29 Be able to develop and evaluate design options in terms of the heritage, cultural and community values embodied in the site, and in relation to project requirements. 
PC 30 Be able to explore options for siting a project, including integrating information and analysis of relevant cultural, social and economic factors.

At the end of this session participants should be able to:
1. Experience the visual, hearing and physical disabilities than can accompany old age and dementia. 
2. Provide a better understanding on how dementia can affect the way a person experiences and interacts with the built environment. 
3. Outline the requirements of the various levels in the Livable Housing Australia (LHA) Design Guidelines.
4. List the steps required to certify a project under LHA.
