Liveable housing through the lens of dementia

Liveable housing through the lens of dementia
The Liveable Housing Australia Design Guidelines are increasingly being referred to by local planning authorities. Clare Paterson will discuss how their application has been used in various housing situations and the steps required to have a project LHA Certified. With a focus on the acute hospital environment, Ellie Newman will give you a better understanding on how dementia can affect the way a person experiences and interacts with the built environment. The seminar will be an interactive experience session’ that will engage and enlighten attendees on what it is like to live with dementia or reduced abilities along with highlighting design changes that can enable them to maintain independence. Two volunteers will wear an ageing suit to demonstrate the impact of ageing on the body and be able to experience the visual, hearing and physical disabilities than can accompany old age and dementia.

Speaker

CLARE PATERSON

KPA Architects

Clare has worked on a range of projects including aged care, residential and interior design. She is a registered Liveable Housing Australia Design Guideline Assessor, which involves certifying current and future homes and assessing how a home can be better designed to suit a resident’s abilities. She is also in the process to be registered as one of the first Specialist Disability Accommodation Certifiers nationally to certify projects under the NDIS.

Speaker

ELLIE NEWMAN

Clinical Specialist for Delirium and Dementia,
Royal Perth/Bentley Hospital

Ellie’s session will focus on the experience of the built environment for the older patient living with dementia (or cognitive impairment more broadly) in a health care setting.
The session will be experiential and perhaps a touch challenging, to build understanding and empathy from participants. Hopefully this will help architects consider the impact of design decisions on the end user (older person living with dementia).
