Overview
Using best practice case studies, Eric Martin AM and Prof. Dr. Janice Rieger will be investigating the intersection of heritage conservation and inclusive design, moving explore how heritage spaces can meet the needs of all abilities, beyond building code and DDA minimum compliance to explore how architects can work to create accessible spaces for all users. Through case studies and practical insights, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how heritage spaces can be sensitively adapted to meet diverse needs whilst preserving cultural significance. This session will examine what inclusivity means and how this is negotiated within a heritage context.

- Understand the issues and opportunities when addressing inclusivity for heritage places
- Apply knowledge of relevant legislation, building codes and standards to address barriers to universal access of heritage places and sites
- Apply knowledge of behavioural and social sciences to optimise inclusivity in design, within a heritage context

Chair: Michael Queale
Principal Heritage Architect, Heritage South Australia, Department of Environment and Water
Michael has over 35 years of experience in heritage conservation in South Australia, encompassing heritage assessment, conservation of buildings and the design of contemporary buildings within historic contexts. As Principal Heritage Architect, Michael is responsible for heritage policy and advocacy. He also leads professional heritage advice in relation to the development of heritage places. Michael holds a Master in Cultural Heritage (Deakin) is a Visiting Fellow in the University of Adelaide School of Architecture, is Chair of the Aust Institute of Architects Heritage Committee and has been past Vice-President of Australia ICOMOS.

Principal, Eric Martin and Associates
Eric is the principal of Eric Martin and Associates. He has more than 45 year's experience as a professional architect in the private and public sectors. He has extensive experience in managing a wide range of projects. Eric has developed a national and international reputation for this work in the areas of accessibility and heritage buildings. Eric is a Life Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects and is currently a Member of the Australian Institute of Architects National Enabling Architecture Committee, the Institute's National Practice Committee, is the Institute's deputy on the UIA Region IV International Committees on Access and Heritage and the Institute's representative on the Australian Building Codes Committee.

Head, School of Architecture, UTS, Sydney
Professor Janice Rieger is Head, School of Architecture, UTS, Sydney and was recently, Head, Architecture, Design and Planning at Griffith University. Janice has been designing for inclusion and access across Australia, Canada and Europe for 25 years, and her work has won international universal design awards, national design awards, a Mayor’s Access Recognition Award, and a State-level disability award. Dr Rieger is an Australian Research Council (ARC) Fellow with national research focusing on creating greater access to cultural heritage. Janice has held appointments to international design juries, disability congress committees, city and national council board positions, and international scientific advisory boards for universal design.
