The Australian Apartment Advocacy (AAA) conducts research every two years to ascertain owners views about their apartments and what they love, would change and also buy next.
Presenter Samantha Reece will provide an overview of the 2025 findings which spoke to 1100 apartment owners nationally. Based on this research being conducted since 2019, Samantha will also demonstrate trends when it comes to preferences for customisation, powder rooms and the like. This is the only research of its kind Nationally.

Candice Halliday - Principal Architect
Candice Halliday is the Principal Architect and founder of CNA Design Studio, based in regional New South Wales. With over a decade of experience, she is known for designing sustainable, inclusive spaces that respond to both people and place. Her work spans residential, education, health, aged care, commercial, and interior design sectors, shaped by her time in diverse practices across Canberra and Newcastle.
A registered Building Design Practitioner and specialist in Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), Candice is a national advocate for accessible, high-performance design. As the 2026 National President of the Australian Institute of Architects’ Emerging Architects and Graduates Network (EmAGN), she champions equity, mentorship, and regional engagement.
Her practice reflects a commitment to circular economy principles, collaborative industry leadership, and architecture that fosters community, resilience, and innovation.

Samantha Reece - Director of Australian Apartment Advocacy
Samantha Reece, Director of Australian Apartment Advocacy (AAA), is widely recognised as the “Erin Brockovich of apartments.” She founded AAA in 2016 to represent the 2.5 million Australians living in apartments, championing the lifestyle benefits while advocating strongly for improved quality and accountability. Her work includes launching the first Apartment Buyer and Owners’ Education Kit, conducting a national longitudinal study of apartment owners, and establishing initiatives such as the Apartment Awards for Excellence, Strata Success, and FLAME (Female Leaders in Apartment Management Excellence).
Through her advocacy, Samantha has helped drive significant legislative reforms across New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT—resulting in the first major changes in some regions in more than 26 years. She is also a prominent media commentator, regularly appearing across major outlets including Sky News, Channel 7, 9 and 10, Sunrise, the 7.30 Report and The Sydney Morning Herald, where she shares insights on the future and benefits of apartment living.

- Understand owner/buyer/investor preferences for bathroom/bed and amenity configurations
- Identify the reasons why buyers/owners/investors choose an apartment over other housing choices
- Interpret trends and drivers since 2019 for apartment purchases
- Understand the role that architects play in guiding developers on apartment designs and floorplans

PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC19 Be able to identify, analyse and evaluate client project requirements and objectives using qualitative and quantitative methods and, where required by the terms of engagement, to assist cost estimators in determining project feasibility/viability.
PC24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations.
PC28 Be able to draw on knowledge from building sciences and technology, environmental sciences and behavioural and social sciences as part of preliminary design research and when developing the conceptual design to optimise the performance of the project.
PC29 Be able to develop and evaluate design options in terms of the heritage, cultural and community values embodied in the site, and in relation to project requirements.
