Overview
‘ARTICULATION’ invites the viewer to reconsider the boundaries between art and architectural education. Architectural drawing exists, however it is subject to a series of buffers that take away from the inspiration of its origin. The exhibition further prompts the viewer to ask the questions of is an architecture student an artist? What is drawing? Is the final output purely technical documentation or do they possess traces of artistic practice?
This exhibition brings together a range of drawings and models created by 37 architecture students enrolled at the University of Sydney, University of Technology or the University of New South Wales. Aiming to reveal the juxtaposition of the artist and the architecture student, the exhibition demonstrates how drawing becomes a spectrum, from loose conceptual ideas to rigid technical language, shaped by institutional structures, rubrics and industry expectations.
The opportunity for architecture students to display their work in the RAIA NSW Chapter creates a conversation about the experience of the architecture student and how this transforms into the practicing architect. By bringing the architecture students' experiences into the foyer space, the exhibition aims to open a conversation about the relationship between creativity, discipline and the culture of architectural education.
