Overview

The Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal is the highest honour the Institute can bestow. The award was created in 1960 to recognise distinguished service by Australian architects who have designed or executed buildings of high merit; produced work of great distinction resulting in the advancement of architecture or endowed the profession of architecture in a distinguished manner.

Each year since 1970 the Gold Medallist has delivered the AS Hook Memorial Address. The address was named in memory of Alfred Samuel Hook. The address provides insight into the life, work and principles of the Gold Medallist and the state of the profession at that time. The AS Hook presentation is traditionally the final presentation of the tour and is held in the Gold Medallist's home state.

Laura Cockburn, NSW Chapter President will open the night speaking to the history and significance of the Gold Medal, and introduce John Wardle who will be presented with the Medal by Helen Lochhead, immediate past National President. We will then hear the AS Hook Memorial Address presented by John Wardle.

The ‘Architect’s Architect’ John Wardle was announced as the 2020 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medallist.
John is an awarded designer of consummate skill, whose works, from the smallest intricate piece of joinery to complex high-rise buildings receive detailed attention and conscientious formal experiment.  His works celebrate both individual craft and the broader production processes of making a building.  John has re-positioned the role of the architect as chief designer in the process of making a building.  His projects and accolades are the outcome of a successful studio-based collaborative practice where design excellence takes prime position in every project.
With more than three decades of developing his skills to often address competing agendas, John has created a practice of national stature and international repute.
