PALS Refresher: Client Architect Agreement - Part 1

Overview

Having sound knowledge of the client-architect agreement and all its different components is critical to a successful project outcome. The scope of services and associated fee structure put in place needs to be well understood to ensure a project can be properly serviced.

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

    2015 Competencies:

    Design: Project Briefing

    1.1 Preparation & endorsement of an agreement between client and Architect.

    2021 Competencies:

    Practice Management and Professional Conduct:

    PC 5 Be able to apply essential elements of a client architect agreement across the range of procurement methods in relation to their appropriateness to the scale and type of the project, including alternatives for partial services and the engagement of secondary and sub-consultants. 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:

  1. Understand why a client-architect agreement is required
  2. Understand the principles of the client-architect agreement
  3. Understand the different components that form the client-architect agreement
  4. Understand how to develop a project brief, scope of services and budget
  5. Understand how to set a fee against the project brief, scope of services and budget

Overview

Having sound knowledge of the client-architect agreement and all its different components is critical to a successful project outcome. Knowing about aspects relating to rights and obligations can assist if issues or problems arise during the course of the project. This module will look into:

  • Provisions relating to architect’s rights on a project
  • How to deal with disputes and possible termination
  • Itemising various aspects in special condition
  • Advising the client of theirs and the architect’s obligations

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

      Design: Project Briefing

      1.1 Preparation & endorsement of an agreement between client and Architect.

Overview

This module introduces the subject of managing costs on a project.

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

    Design: Project Briefing

    2.3 Evaluation of factors influencing and impacting on project cost
    2.4 Analysis of project brief in relation to client’s objective, budget and timeframe
    2.5 Attainment of approval from client of project budget and timeframe 

    Design: Schematic Design

    4.8 Analysis of schematic design in regard to cost planning and timeframe to comply with client and project requirements 

    Documentation: Detailed Design

    5.7 Resolution of project design to address budget and time constraints 

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this presentation you should be able to:

  1. Understand the process of designing to a budget
  2. Understand what impacts construction costs
  3. Understand the difference between brief and budget
  4. Understand the process of helping clients work out their project and building budgets
  5. Understand how to establish and monitor building budgets
