Overview

Queensland is the most disaster-prone state in Australia. As we’ve seen in the last year alone, we can face catastrophic bushfires one month and unprecedented flooding the next. In the past decade, Queensland has been hit by more than 80 significant natural disasters, resulting in devastating loss of life and a recovery and reconstruction bill of more than $15.7 billion. By 2050 disasters are expected to cost Queensland’s economy around $18.3 billion per year.

The repercussions of climate change on our diverse communities, livelihoods and lifestyles is momentous and may be felt for years afterwards; the impact on our irreplaceable biodiversity and  ecosystems is incalculable. No community in these State seems immune to weather-related disasters: indeed year after year, more and more vulnerabilities and hazards are exposed. We know that Queensland is experiencing hotter days and more intense and heavy rainfall events, collectively leading to heat storms, bushfires, cyclones, storm tides, larger floods and much more - sea level rise, inundation, encroachment of salt water into water table, death of the Great Barrier Reef.

Can the infrastructure of human settlement - the people, and the places and buildings we occupy and move between - withstand the beatings of fast-moving weather events - super storms, flash flood, storm surge?

How do we build resilience to withstand the relentless impacts of slow-moving catastrophes - drought, species extinction and sea level rise?

  • We know that the increasing frequency of intense weather events is inextricably linked to climate change.
  • We know that globally, the climate is changing because human activity is increasing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The latest Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change Report (IPCC) urges the world to limit global warming to 1.5deg.

This webinar will be underpinned by the following questions:

  • How can architects do our part to make the transition to zero-emissions?
  • What are specific disaster risk reduction strategies in Queensland disaster-prone areas?
  • What skills, practices, processes and technologies do we need to develop now, rather than focussing on solving/fixing problems using the same old way of doing things?
  • How do architects in Queensland help to limit global warming to 1.5 deg?
