Iain Smale 

Iain’s extensive knowledge of carbon offsetting has made him a ‘go to’ for clients in many sectors across Australia. He helps them understand abatement and develop portfolios that are well-aligned to their businesses. Iain instigated the first Validation/Verification Bodies (GS-VVB) accreditation for Pangolin Associates. Pangolin is the first, and currently the only Gold Standard auditor in Australia. The team now supports clients domestically and internationally with GS carbon credit projects. Iain has led several clients through the Climate Active Carbon Neutral Program. Many of them have become industry firsts, including Ross Hill Winery, BioPak, With_Archecture Studio, Real Utilities (Frasers Properties Australia), Medibank, and Sydney Harbour Ferries. In 2019-2020, Iain grew Pangolin Associates through the NSW bushfires and the COVID 19 pandemic. He brought together a larger, highly skilled and motivated team. Together they continue to grow Pangolin Associates’ business and service offerings.

Mark Roehrs, Principal Hassell

Mark Roehrs is the global leader for the Education and Science Sector at Hassell.  As an architect with over 30 years’ experience in the sector he leads business development and provides knowledge and design leadership to Hassell’s multi-disciplinary teams working across campus master planning and building design.
He is highly regarded by clients for his strategic thinking and innovative briefing and design, with Australian Institute of Architects national awards for projects including the Ecosciences Precinct, the UQ Advanced Engineering Building and the UQ Global Change Institute.
Recently  completed buildings Mark has led include the USC Moreton Bay Campus Foundation Building and the ANU Birch Building refurbishment for engineering with the ANU Research School of Physics to be completed later in the year.

Mark has a particular interest in:
• next generation learning spaces for the technology century,
• collaborative research environments to support innovation and discovery
• optimising utilisation through sharing, flexibility and design quality, and
• the place based university

Paul Worroll 

Paul Worroll is the founder and Managing Director of Reddog Architects.  With over 25 years’ experience in all aspects of the business and practice of architecture, Paul has developed a thriving practice that now employs 14 staff.  Reddog Architects has won architectural and property development awards at both state and national levels for house alterations and additions, educational architecture, small project architecture, residential architecture and sustainable architecture.  Paul became a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Architects in 2017. He is passionate in supporting and giving back to the design community including as a Fellow, a current Chapter Councillor of the Queensland Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects and as  the current Chairperson on the Queensland AIA Sustainability Committee. Paul has a specific interest and passion around sustainable architecture. Reddog Architects achieved carbon neutrality in 2020 and are dedicated to seeking industry support for furthering this action within our profession, as well as educating staff and clients on the benefits of sustainability within our community. Paul also enjoys giving his time to mentor and develop students of Architecture at QUT. Outside of architecture Paul is a dedicated triathlete and enjoys travelling and competing in Ironman events. 

Peter McArdle 

Peter’s enduring focus through his career has been various aspects surrounding sustainable design. This includes how to apply sustainable practices to projects without them needing to ‘feel’ a particular way, or achieve a particular ”look”.  Underlying this is a philosophy which forms an approach to, and a direction for, every project: rather than defining a prescriptive destination. In 1997 Peter completed his thesis on Sustainable Technologies in Architecture, such as solar PV’s, solar hot water, and on site sewerage (composting toilets).  At that time the thesis was investigating the reasons for their lack of use in a country and climate which was ideally suited to their adoption, and was often at the leading edge of their invention. Peter gained valuable experience in different project roles, including working as Project Architect and preparing detailed documentation packages for other Brisbane based Architecture companies. Peter has engaged with clients from concept design through to end of construction on a range of primarily residential projects.  This includes home designs, townhouses and apartment design.

Andrew Watson 

Practice Director Andrew Watson is a Qld-Registered architect with over 25 years’ experience in commercial and residential architecture, town planning, conservation, and refurbishment of historic and existing buildings. Andrew is a member of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) and a member of the Qld AIA Climate Action & Sustainability Committee, helping support, advocate, and promote Sustainable Design. He has specialist qualifications in architectural conservation (heritage) from the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies, at the University of York. He has been a board member of The National Trust of Queensland and is a member of Australia ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites). He has worked for large and small commercial architectural practices as well as for the Brisbane City Council as an architectural assessor, town planner and heritage architect.
