Following on from the success of last year’s National Seminar Series, “The Application of Colour in Architecture”, Dr Marisha McAuliffe will expand on the role of colour in architecture and design, highlighting how it is used to influence behavioural response in the built environment.  The seminar will explore metamerism and the role of natural and artificial light, as well as practical application, context, perception, and physiological response to colour in architectural environments.  In this context, Marisha will address in detail the three essential considerations when working with colour in architecture and design; Who? What? Where?

Overview

Following on from the success of last year’s National Seminar Series, “The Application of Colour in Architecture”, Dr Marisha McAuliffe will expand on the role of colour in architecture and design, highlighting how it is used to influence behavioural response in the built environment. 

The seminar will explore metamerism and the role of natural and artificial light, as well as practical application, context, perception, and physiological response to colour in architectural environments. In this context, Marisha will address in detail the three essential considerations when working with colour in architecture and design; Who? What? Where?

CPD

This presentation is equivalent to 2 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

2015 Competencies:

Design: Conceptual Design
3.1 Design response integrates the objectives of brief, user intent and built purpose.
3.2 Application of creative imagination, aesthetic judgement and critical evaluation in formulating design options

Design: Schematic Design
4.4 Inclusion of expertise of relevant specialists and consultants in developing the project design.
4.6 Investigation and integration of appropriate material selection for the project design.

2021 Competencies:

Project Initiation and Conceptual Design:
PC 18 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, research, emergent knowledge and critical evaluation in formulating and refining concept design options, including the exploration of three dimensional form and spatial quality.
PC 24 Be able to prepare and analyse project development options in response to a project brief – its objectives, budget, user intent and built purpose, risk and timeframes, including environmental sustainability considerations. 

Detailed Design and Construction Documentation:
PC 36 Be able to apply creative imagination, design precedents, emergent knowledge, critical evaluation and continued engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to produce a coherent project design. This should be resolved in terms of supporting health and wellbeing outcomes for Country, site planning, formal composition, spatial planning and circulation as appropriate to the project brief and all other factors affecting the project. 
PC 39 Be able to integrate the material selection, structural and construction systems established in the conceptual design into the detailed design and documentation.
PC 41 Be able to coordinate and integrate input from specialists and consultants into the detailed design and documentation. 

 

PC 45 Be able to nominate and integrate quality and performance standards with regard to selected materials, finishes, fittings, components and systems, considering the impact on Country and the environment, and the whole life carbon impact of the project. This includes integrating life cycle assessments and other expertise and advice from consultants. "

 


Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session participants should be able to:

  • Discuss colour psychology in architecture and how it can be applied informally through practical application
  • Describe the core elements of physiological response to colour in architecture
  • Access colour psychology in the built environment
  • Apply a simple colour analysis in a built environment setting
  • Identify the role of natural and artificial light in the context of colour psychology and design
  • Apply colour in an informed approach, that considers perceptual response in built environment projects
  • Demonstrate to clients the basic elements of colour psychology and application in architecture and design


Speaker

    DR MARISHA MCAULIFFE

    Dr Marisha McAuliffe is a full-time academic at Queensland University of Technology (AU) and sessional Course Director at University of Cambridge’s (UK) Institute of Continuing Education. Educated in interior architecture and holding a PhD in design thinking and cognitive science, she specialises in colour theory and application in the built environment.
