In this session, award winning conservation architect, urban designer and author Elizabeth Vines explores heritage conservation frameworks in an Australian and international context, providing an overview of key tools, standards, targets and the ethics and attitudes underpinning them. Following this, Yugumbir man and principal architect for the Government Architect NSW Dillon Kombumerri presents illuminating knowledge and perspectives for reading and respecting Indigenous cultural heritage, helping to build attendees’ First Nations cultural literacy in line with new NSCA performance criteria.
Overview
In this session, award winning conservation architect, urban designer and author Elizabeth Vines explores heritage conservation frameworks in an Australian and international context, providing an overview of key tools, standards, targets and the ethics and attitudes underpinning them. Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course participants should be able to:

- Describe the New Urban Agenda and articulate how to respond
- List key conservation Charters and organisations and describe their ethical bases
- Describe the Burra Charter’s key concepts of cultural significance and conservation

- Recognise key issues in recognition of and respect for Indigenous cultural heritage

3.3 Design response incorporates assessment of the physical location and relevant wider regional, contextual and environmental issues.
3.4 Design response incorporates assessment of relevant legislation, codes and industry standards.

Our Heritage HIIT Series course will deliver outcomes related to the following Competencies from the 2021 National Standard of Competency for Architects:
PRACTICE MANAGEMENT AND PROFESSIONAL CONDUCT
PC8 Be able to implement culturally responsive and meaningful engagement processes that respect the importance of Country and reciprocal relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples across architectural services.
PC12 Provide independent, culturally responsive and objective advice in accordance with relevant building codes, standards, technical specifications and guidelines, and planning regulations, including climate change implications, across all aspects of architectural practice.
PROJECT INITIATION AND CONCEPTUAL DESIGN
PC17 Have an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ aspirations to care for Country and how these inform architectural design.
PC27 Understand how to embed the knowledge, worldviews and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, shared through engagement processes, into the conceptual design in a meaningful, respectful and appropriate way.

Architect and practice principal Anne-Marie Treweeke is a key member of the Lovell Chen team. She is central to the decision-making processes of the practice, drawing on more than 20 years' experience in architecture and strategic and master planning. A skilled critical analyst with considerable insight into the way the construction industry operates. Her work includes the direction of multi-disciplinary teams for the planning, design, refurbishment, adaptation and conservation of buildings and places, including significant institutional buildings and large-scale complex sites.

PRINCIPAL, MCDOUGALL AND VINES
Elizabeth Vines is a member of the Australian Heritage Council and recipient of the 2020 Institute of Architects SA Presidents’ Medal. She has decades of experience in heritage management throughout Australia and Asia, as an architect, teacher and heritage advocate. She has also been a consultant to UNESCO, the European Union, and the Getty Conservation Institute in the Asian Region. She is a past President of Australian ICOMOS (2012 – 2015), and an Adjunct Professor at Hong Kong University and Deakin University Melbourne. She is the author of many publications including her well known Streetwise Series, 3 books focusing on the management of change in heritage cities and towns in Asia and Australia. In 2009 she was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia.

Dillon is a strategic design thinker and social conciliator with a passion for projects that seek to improve the health, well-being and prosperity of indigenous communities. With over 25 years of experience in architectural practice he brings his own unique indigenous perspective to re-imagining the built environment.
During this time Dillon has also been teaching and lecturing globally in many forums to shine a light on the hidden value of indigenous knowledge and how it can positively influence private and public agencies to deliver better outcomes for the built environment.
