Overview

The NCC sets the minimum requirements for safety, health, amenity, accessibility, and sustainability of buildings, including those with heritage significance. Architect Anne-Marie Treweeke, building surveyor Marie Otteren and fire engineer Ian Moore will discuss how architects and consultant teams can work together to meet the challenge of NCC compliance while respecting heritage values and avoiding unnecessary interventions.

  • Apply design strategies to minimise or mitigate the impact of code compliance, while maintaining the heritage significance of a place.

Chair: Can Ercan
Co-director, Filardo Ercan Architects

Can Ercan is a registered architect, heritage consultant, and co-director of Filardo Ercan Architects, based in Canberra. With nearly 30 years of experience, he has worked on a wide range of commercial, residential, and heritage projects across Canberra, Sydney, and Istanbul. Can provides heritage consultancy services to both private and public sector clients, including Bathurst Regional Council and the NSW Parks and Wildlife Service. He has been an active member of the ACT Chapter Heritage Committee of the Australian Institute of Architects for the past decade, serving as Chair for much of that time, and is also a current member of the Institute’s National Heritage Committee.

Director, Lovell Chen

Architect Anne-Marie Treweeke is a key member of the Lovell Chen team. She is central to the decision-making processes of the practice, drawing on more than 30 years' experience in architecture and strategic and master planning. A skilled critical analyst with considerable insight into the way the construction industry operates. Her work includes the direction of multi-disciplinary teams for the planning, design, refurbishment, adaptation and conservation of buildings and places, including significant institutional buildings and large-scale complex sites.

Director, du Chateau Chun 

Marie is a Director at du Chateau Chun and has over 20 years of practice in the area of building code consulting, as well as experience as a registered practitioner (Building Surveyor Unlimited in Victoria and A1 certifier in NSW). She has undertaken extensive formal qualifications, including Bachelor in Architecture (Interiors), post graduate degrees in building surveying and performance based fire codes, as well as a Master in Construction Law. Marie currently sits on the Building Appeals Board (BAB), is a member of the Building Regulations Advisory Committee (BRAC) and is an active member of Victorian Chapter Committee of the Australian Institute of Building Surveyors (AIBS).

Associate director, leader fire safety engineering, NJM Design 

Ian has had over 35 years experience as a fire and risk specialist. He has developed fire safety strategies and performed risk assessments for all occupancy types including heritage related projects and occupancy types from theatres, museums public assembly, sports stadiums, apartments, offices, industrial, retail, and communications facilities. Ian has pioneered the use of risk assessment and risk management in commercial fire engineering projects such as Tassie Shoal methanol plant, Westin Hotel, Federation Square, Gold Coast Stadium and Canberra Deep Space Tracking Centre.
