Co-hosted by the NSW Architects Registration Board, this event will provide practitioners with critical information direct from Building Commissioner David Chandler, Director of the Office of the Building Commissioner Matt Press, Registrar Dr Kirsten Orr and key Institute members who have been involved in the development of the Act and Regulation.

The Design and Building Practitioners Act 2020 and Regulation will effect major change for the construction industry, with significant implications for architects practising in NSW.

David Chandler OAM – NSW Building Commissioner


David Chandler OAM was appointed NSW Building Commissioner in 2019 after an impressive forty year career in the Australian construction industry. In his capacity as NSW Building Commissioner David is improving the quality of construction and restoring trust in the industry through leading the delivery of Construct NSW, in collaboration with the sector. David was awarded an Order of Australia Medal in 1989 for his services to the construction industry. 

Matt Press – Director, Office of the NSW Building Commissioner



Matt Press is the Director of the Office of the NSW Building Commissioner and responsible for leading the delivery of Construct NSW – a transformation program that seeks to restore pride and confidence in the NSW building and construction industry. Matt is passionate about driving change to produce customer-centric outcomes and previously held roles in building regulation, strategy consulting and corporate affairs. He has worked locally and internationally for organisations such as PwC, Ofcom, Bupa Health and Optus.

Dr Kirsten Orr – Registrar, NSW Architects Registration Board



Kirsten is Registrar of the NSW Architects Registration Board and a Director of the Architects Accreditation Council of Australia. Previously, she was Professor of Architecture and Dean of the School of Technology, Environments & Design at the University of Tasmania. Integrating her deep knowledge of professional issues with her significant academic background, Kirsten has made leadership contributions to all of the major Australian government and professional bodies regulating the practice of architecture, education of architecture students and accreditation of Australian architecture programs.

In her present role as Registrar she is a member of a number of expert advisory groups convened by the NSW Building Commissioner. She has been active in recent government consultation on the intersection between the existing Architects Act 2003 and the new Design and Building Practitioners Act and Regulation.
