Overview

In the second of a three-part series, EmAGN invites emerging graduates and architects to a breakfast forum on Construction Culture: The Present. 

Building on momentum of last years' mental health and wellbeing events, this breakfast will gather data and qualitative information directly from our members on matters relating to practice culture . The data and this initiative will inform joint representation between the Institute and other industry bodies to advocate to government and industry for improved culture and wellbeing in the construction industry.

All welcome, including those who did not attend Part 1.

CPD

Participation in this workshop is equivalent to 1 hour/point of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:

PC 2 Implement practice resources and apply ethical employment practice methods and quality assurance systems to facilitate efficient, consistent and timely delivery of architectural services.
PC 4 Be able to apply principles of project and staff planning and resource costs to establish realistic and achievable time frames.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this session, participants should be able to: 

1. Identify what ethical employment practice methods look like
2. Identify the resources available to graduate and emerging architects to assist with sustainable delivery of architectural services
3. Demonstrate an understanding of what realistic and achievable time frames look like within practice

Presenters

This session is being presented by members of the 2022 SA EmAGN committee.

Rhiana Bell

Rhiana is an Associate at Russell and Yelland Architects, a registered Architect with 8 years experience where much of her time has been spent across both junior and senior education projects. She believes in the democratic power of good design. She has previously been involved in guest critic roles at University of Adelaide, SA Architecture Awards Jury, EmAGN committee member (2021-2022), ACA Wellbeing Committee member (2021-2022) and the Institute Construction Culture Initiative Group (2021-2022). 

Mental wellbeing in practice has been forefront of Rhiana’s mind during her studies and practice and she believes that with pressure growing on our industry, planning for change in our industry and the people who are a part of it, is of growing importance. 

Leah Salamon 

Leah is passionate about increasing community engagement with architecture, and believes that through collective and creative thinking we can strengthen South Australia’s design identity. She is a registered Architect with 15+ years experience within medium-sized Adelaide firms, working for government, private and corporate sectors. She has previously represented the South Australian Architecture community as a SA Chapter Council member, and as the Executive Team Leader and Co-Creative Director with the first two SA Festivals of Architecture and Design (FAD). Currently working as a Senior Architect at Detail Studio, she enjoys an approach to architecture that is collaborative, respectful and fresh. 

Jenna Holder

Jenna is an Architect at Das Studio and previously worked for GHD Woodhead, working on large, complex projects in the Middle East, Pacific Islands and throughout Australia. Outside of practice, Jenna has been vocal for a number of causes – on the Institute National Committee for Gender Equity and now as an SA Chapter Councillor. She also lends that voice to a new generation of designers, as a sessional tutor at multiple universities.
