Cultural Curating when Designing with Country
More people are acknowledging original custodians of our lands hold many answers as to how we view ourselves within the landscape and with each other. This most definitely informs the making of our built environment. In this session, Susan Moylan-Coombs and Craig Kerslake will talk about what they refer to as “Designing From Country”. With cultural engagement with Aboriginal community members and Elders, clients are taken “Back to Country” on an experiential journey. By following traditional cultural practices, overlaid with architectural thinking, clients are welcomed to the landscape, and often find their understanding and perspectives transformed. The experience is both grounding and many say they find strong bonds and a sense of connection to “place” in the process. Beyond this, an often restructured brief is gained, informed by ideas of “Belonging to Country”. SPEAKERS Susan Moylan-Coombs is the Director of the Gaimaragal Group which was established to lead social change and create social impact by bringing together like minds and like spirits. We want to create a new story of connection and wellbeing for all people. Our aim is to facilitate the voice for our Elders, empower our youth, and provide two-way cultural translation to bring all individuals and communities together. Susan’s previous positions held; Executive Producer ABC’s Indigenous Programs Unit and Head of Production, NITV/SBS. Today Susan uses her skills to be a conduit, weaving culture through mainstream systems and processes to create a new way of doing business that is more sustainable and mindful of future generations. Today Moylan-Coombs refers to herself as a Cultural Curator and she works across a diversity of sectors from construction, education, housing, health and community. Wiradjuri Architect Craig Kerslake is a passionate social advocate for sustainable outcomes and the wellbeing of First Australians. He seeks the realisation of built form with enthusiasm and spirited innovation. As an Aboriginal Architect, Craig draws upon ideas of “Country” and brings this forth into architectural form with unique expression that finds resonance with all Australians.
