This CPD Masterclass addresses the challenges architects are experiencing in relation to Section J of the NCC.
Session 1 is a series of recorded presentations unpacking Section J overall. It considers case studies in different climate zones, discusses thermal bridging unpacks the difference between Performance Solutions and Deemed to Satisfy.
Presenters are architects, environmental consultants and a façade engineer who will consider a more detailed examination of thermal bridging. An architect will discuss how to successfully collaborate with an environmental consultant, at what stage of a project to engage an environmental consultant and what information is required for an appropriate brief.
Session 2 is a Workshop designed to further demystify Section J and includes an architect discussing with the environmental consultant on the challenges of a particular project, a demonstration of the façade calculator and a Q&A discussion with the panel. The forwarded questions will be answered, and live questions will also be taken if time permits.
This presentation is equivalent to 6 hours/points of formal CPD and will deliver outcomes related to the following Competency/s from the National Standard of Competency for Architects:
Design: Project Briefing
1.4 Identification of factors that may impact on client project requirements and objectives.
Design: Conceptual Design
3.3 Design response incorporates assessment of the physical location and relevant wider regional, contextual and environmental issues.
3.4 Design response incorporates assessment of relevant legislation, codes and industry standards.
3.7 Assessment and integration of construction systems and materials consistent with project brief.
Design: Schematic Design
4.6 Investigation and integration of appropriate material selection for the project design.
Documentation: Detailed Design
5.3 Evaluation and integration of regulatory requirements.
5.5 Integration of materials and components based upon an understanding of their physical properties.
At the end of this session you should be able to:

After completing a Bachelor or Architecture at the University of Sydney, Scott has gained over 35 years of experience practicing in Architecture and 28 years in CAD-BIM teaching at university and technical colleges. In addition to his university commitments, Scott has worked for the past 6 years as a digital technology manager for a leading quantity surveyor helping with validation of models for quantification to derive costs.
MICHAEL MIN RA
Graduating in 1999 from Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago School of Architecture with budding interests in building design materials and means of making, Michael headed to New York City to work under Tim Macfarlane of Dewhurst Macfarlane and Partners on building facades. There, in a highly immersive and self governed environment, he gained unique experiences working on the invention of a cable shell structure for the Mori Art Center in Tokyo and subsequently in developing the very first Apple store feature glass elements in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Two years later in New York with his colleague Marc Simmons and Bruce Nichol, embarked on the ambition of starting a new practice calling it FRONT, expanding later to California, Asia and most recently to Europe.
Michael Resides in Hong Kong with his family jointly running the entire global practice with his partners working on projects of all scales ranging from art installations and cultural institutions to high rise buildings.
As a Founding Director of Gresley Abas, and based in Melbourne since 2016, Ahmad brings design talent and incisive analytical skills to projects, from briefing and concept through to documentation, delivery and handover.
Over the past two decades, Ahmad has successfully procured and delivered many complex and logistically challenging projects. He draws upon excellent negotiation, relationship-building and team-management skills. Robert has a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the University of Technology Sydney, with a Diploma in Engineering Practice and Cert IV in NatHERS Assessment. During his study and consultancy work, he has focused on the sustainable design, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency of residential and commercial buildings.
Experience in thermal and energy modelling software, including IES VE, BERSpro and FirstRate5, combined with an understanding of building principles, allows Robert to provide his clients with practical design solutions. Due to the introduction of tighter thermal bridging restrictions into the NCC 2019 Section J, Robert and his team have been working with architects and Façade product manufacturers to streamline this transition across all building sectors. Robert is currently the ESD Manager at BCA Energy.
