Overview

Built environment professionals are uniquely positioned to reframe the relationship between designer and client and deliver projects that benefit the community through applying principles of social value.

Social Value in Context (9am – 12pm)
Presented by leading expert in social design Dr Angelique Edmonds, part 1 of this seminar will look at what social value is, how it is framed in international and local contexts in terms of policy and the opportunities it offers for architects. These ideas will be reinforced through a case study presented by Sue Wittenoom (Soft Build), looking at the ways that social value is woven into design through planning, briefing, and change.

Speaker

Dr Angelique Edmonds (University of South Australia)

Angelique Edmonds has a passion for design education, social value and public engagement. Her recent book: Connecting People, Place & Design  (published by Intellect UK) draws together fifteen years of her practice and research regarding human relationships to place, our capacities to connect with one another and place, and the extent to which contemporary public design mechanisms allow public participation.   Angelique is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of South Australia and founder and creative director of the School for Creating Change.

Speaker

Sue Wittenoom (The Soft Build)

Sue Wittenoom is a registered architect and founder of The Soft Build, a Sydney based consultancy that helps people use building projects as a scaffold for organisational change.

As a director of DEGW and AECOM's Strategy+ practice she worked with clients such as SBS, Woolworths and The Peter Doherty Institute, using both the briefing process and the built environment to shape new ways of living, working, and learning. The Soft Build collaborates with project managers and architects to provide specialist planning and briefing inputs for consultant teams. Sue also works directly with client project leaders on engagement, communications and change frameworks.

In this session she will show how social value can be created through briefing for major projects in industry, health, and education. Seasoned decision-makers understand the risks of complex buildings and will invest in a design process that becomes the foundation of a successful transition.

This interactive session will put you inside the shoes of an internal stakeholder to develop an aspirational brief for a future project.
