Overview

Built environment professionals are uniquely positioned to reframe the relationship between designer and client and deliver projects that benefit the community through applying principles of social value.

Tools for Social Value-led Design (1pm – 3pm)
Presented by leading expert in social design Dr Angelique Edmonds, part 2 of this seminar will provide introduction to a range of tools for social value-led design. Angelique will present some precedent indicators of social value, some design methods prioritizing social value outcomes, and precedents for evaluation and measurement of social impact. Nick Juniper (The Fulcrum Agency) will discuss the Groote Archipelago Housing programme as a case study for using their SRODI (Social Return on Design Investment) tool. The project was recently jointly awarded the inaugural ArchitectureAU Award for Social Impact

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course participants should be able to:

  • Reference existing projects as successful case studies for prioritising social value
  • Find and use existing tools available for measuring social impact in design projects 
  • Know how to use design methods to achieve social value
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between evaluation and social impact measurement

Dr Angelique Edmonds (University of South Australia)

Angelique Edmonds has a passion for design education, social value and public engagement. Her recent book: Connecting People, Place & Design  (published by Intellect UK) draws together fifteen years of her practice and research regarding human relationships to place, our capacities to connect with one another and place, and the extent to which contemporary public design mechanisms allow public participation.   Angelique is a senior lecturer in architecture at the University of South Australia and founder and creative director of the School for Creating Change.

Nick Juniper (The Fulcrum Agency)

Nick is Associate Principal at The Fulcrum Agency and a Registered Architect with twenty-five years’ experience delivering projects in Australia and Asia. He has studied the principles of social impact assessment and has been awarded Level 1 Associate Practitioner status by Social Ventures International. 

Nick’s project experience includes health and community facilities, schools and aged care facilities across Western Australia and the Northern Territory. He particularly enjoys the opportunities and challenges that come with working in remote communities. He is a member of SIMNA, Social Impact Measurement Network Australia, and was recently awarded joint winners of the inaugural ArchitectureAU Award for Social Impact for the Groote Archipelago Housing programme.
